2. Getting packages in the mail every day this week, some for myself, some for baby a la mode (wonder what my neighbors think).  Thanks Josiah’s Nest for these super stylish clothes!

I Love Our Growing Family!

There really couldn’t be a more exciting time for my family right now!  As I mentioned earlier, my niece was born last week and Marvin and I flew to California to surprise the unsuspecting parents (my brother and SIL).  Of course YOU KNOW I couldn’t have gone this trip without my trusty camera.  :)

Welcome to the world, my beautiful niece Joy!

Here she is at 1 day old!  I’ve never held a baby this small before.  And don’t you love the little bow on the hat that the nurse made for her?  Too cute!

She is such a doll!

Here she is being introduced to the family at home.  Her big brother is already so sweet to her!

Of course, the trip to LA wouldn’t be complete without some quality nephew time as well!

Here we are with Evan at the park, feeding the geese and ducks!

Then we found a pretty tree and my dad took this photo of us (kind of like a maternity photo if you ask me)!

Then the Evan bear joined us, so cute!

One of Evan’s favorite park activities is going down the slides and he sure is good at it!

Afterwards, we took a stroll to Manhattan Beach where we played in the waves.  Evan’s favorite phrase from this trip (translated from Chinese to English) is “Auntie, Uncle, and Evan went to the ocean and got ALL WET!”  He couldn’t stop saying it all night!

Three generations of hats haha!

Here is a look at our growing family (including my baby bump)!

I’ll be back later with some more pictures from the weekend, but seriously, can I just say I miss them all already?  Family time is the best time, don’t you agree?

How was your Labor Day weekend?

P.S. Have you entered the Yellow Plum Blossoms GIVEAWAY?

this little fella can always make me smile.  watching him grow in person and through skype when we can’t physically be there with him has gotten me so much more excited about the little peanut growing inside of me.  on this skype date, i showed evan my belly and he said “cousin”!  he was originally skyping to say happy birthday to marvin and the first words out of his mouth after he said “happy birthday” were “cake”.  he’s a smart little guy.  and at the end of the conversation he couldn’t stop smiling and saying “happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday…” on auto repeat.  baby fever to the max.  <3

THANK YOU for all your sweet comments, IMs, tweets, facebook messages, texts, in person words, etc. on our little news!  you guys are the best!  :)   can’t wait to share more about my pregnancy and baby with you!  have a great weekend!

Happy Cinco de Mayo and More!

Happy Cinco de Mayo!  Here we go with a somewhat random post again today.  I just wanted to ask for forgiveness for being MIA this past week.  As you know last weekend I had an awesome time celebrating my friends wedding in Vegas, this week I had a client in town so was extremely busy with work, I haven’t kept up my shop at all since my last craft fair, I’ve had to turn down some guests posts and giveaways (really flattered that friends have asked though) and I haven’t kept up with commenting on your blogs as much as I’d love to.  I have to say, it’s pretty hard coming back from a weekend vacation… pretty much a vacation from my vacation has been needed and that’s exactly what I’ve been doing (well after a full day of work which is prime blogging time).  Anyhow here goes with my cinco items of randomness, hope you’re still with me!  :)

1) I made this amazing Mango, Tomato and Avocado Salsa (from Allrecipes) the other day.  I used Tortilla Scoops to dip them out and they were perfecto.  Such a perfect Spring time potluck type snack.  I hope these pictures make you hungry, because that was my goal.  ;)   Maybe you can use this recipe for your Cinco de Mayo party, eh?  What do ya say?

Ingredients

  • 1 mango – peeled, seeded and diced
  • 1 avocado – peeled, pitted, and diced
  • 4 medium tomatoes, diced
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 cup chopped red onion
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil

Directions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the mango, avocado, tomatoes, jalapeno, cilantro, and garlic. Stir in the salt, lime juice, red onion, and olive oil. To blend the flavors, refrigerate for about 30 minutes before serving.

2) I have a WINNER to announce! The lucky lady who was picked to win a fabulous Jellyfishfaire print is Cole from Adventures in Love and Happiness! Congrats Cole!! Email me at sandyalamode(at)gmail(dot)com with your choice of print and mailing address, woohoo!!

3) One of the things I look forward to at the beginning of each month, is an Oh, Hello Friend desktop calendar!  I especially love this months because of the adorable bunny (it happens to be the Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese Zodiac too)!

4) My sweet 2 year old nephew left me a voicemail last night.  I think I’ve listened to it about 100 times, no joke.

It was in half English and half Chinese.  Here’s some Chinese translations haha.  (Goo goo = Auntie) (Lai =  Come Here)  Click PLAY below to listen!!  :)

What are your plans for Cinco de Mayo?

California, I Heart You!

Reasons I heart California:

1.  My parents, brother, SIL, nephew, fur-niece and soon-to-be niece live there.  They always feed me well whether it’s eating my favorite jja jiang mien noodles and cake or if it’s going out to get bubble tea.  This is when I flew in to surprise my Dad for his milestone birthday!

Love.

The Noodle Monster.

Eating with chopsticks or eating with hands, which do you prefer?

My mom’s jja jiang mien, SO GOOD!

Birthday cake, the Asian kind with super fluffy frosting, nom nom.

Sweet Shot Day

Whose birthday was it?  Oh yes, it was my Dad’s haha.

2. Finding cute cities around the Los Angeles area that aren’t full of traffic and smog.

A beautiful city hall.

Crazy amount of antique stores, YES!

My parents totally want this arch in their backyard!

And this is where we stayed.  ;)   Well one of these is correct.

Loving the color scheme here.

What a cool faucet and TRIPLE shower head!

3. The plethora of wineries there are.  I could go wine tasting all day every day (photos taken by my Mom)

Are you a fan of California?  What do you love to do there?

A Handmade Dress and a Borrowed Bag

Happy May!  I have something so very special for you, you guys.  Check it out… it’s another Auntie + Nephew photo shoot you’re about to see.  :)

Dress: Handsewn :)Cardigan: J.Crew | Belt: Shop Ruche | Sandals: Forever 21 | Bag: Marc Jacobs

Yup, you read that right, I MADE this dress!  A few weeks ago my friends and I raided the fabric section at Joann’s, picked up a few patterns, and made some shirts, skirts, and dresses!  It’s pretty much just two rectangle pieces sewn together with elastic on top, easy peasy.  Since it’s not too form fitting, I just threw a belt on over the whole thing and called it a day.  I have a feeling I’ll be whipping out a few more throughout the summer.  :)   And the bag?!  Oh the bag… I love the color and style so much.  Thanks Jenny for letting me borrow it, aren’t SILs the best!?

Sorry, I don’t know where his outfit was purchased.  But doesn’t he work the camera so well?  If you compare my first photo and his first photo, you’ll see a posing resemblance.  ;)

He makes my heart melt, but you already knew that.

When’s the last time you made something for yourself?  What was it?

Dress: H&M | Cardigan: Ann Taylor | Tights: Forever 21 | Boots: Steve Madden | Belt: Gift From Mom

Here we go again with the boots and photos from a month ago.  I promise, these are the LAST photos for the season with these boots (I think).  This photo shoot was taken by my dad (yup, our family is totally talented behind the camera) at a park near my parent’s house.  One of my nephew’s absolute favorite things to do is go to the park, his ears perk up at the sound of “gong yuan”, or “park” in Chinese.  And then he repeats “gong yuan” incessantly and asks you to put on his shoes for him so we can leave to the park ASAP, melts my heart.  If you look at my outfits, I don’t actually own a lot of red.  But I am utterly in love with how this red bow belt (yes, bow!) looks against black and white.  And it ties together my coordinated outfit with Evan too, didn’t plan that one.  ;)

Highlights from my Easter weekend?

1) Getting some orders made and packaged up to be sent out on Monday.
2) Sharing a booth at a craft fair with My Little Sunshine Handmade and going on a double date BBQ run!  If you ever come visit in Kansas City, we’ll take you to Oklahoma Joe’s, YUM!
3) Preparing for my best friend’s Bridal Shower and Wedding in Vegas next weekend!
4) Spring Cleaning. Like for serious.
5) Seeing me and Much Love, Illy’s Connection’s post go up on Susannahbean’s blog!  Head on over to check it out!

What did you do for Easter weekend?

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve hung out with my nephew and I think I’m going through withdrawl. So to help me cope, I decided to dedicate a post to him, my Evan bear, and his friends. :)

Bella and Evan, best buddies and siblings.  They like to share… my glasses.

Here he is with Jojo (our stuffed animal kid).  He feeds him Cheerios and apple cider, ain’t that the darndest thing ever?

He shares before he takes his own sip, he sure was taught well.

Well would ya lookie there, it’s a worm.  Don’t worry worm, Evan’s a friendly giant!

And what do we have here?  There’s a spider inside of the green thing but Evan has no fear.  Me, on the other hand… no comment.

GQ Kids, we found you the perfect model.

Sweet Shot Day

Man, I sure do miss this kiddo.  I heart and miss you, Evan bear!  You sure are going to make a great big brother, that’s right, I’m going to be auntie to another lil one coming this summer!  :)

A kind of fancy Mac N Cheese!

First of all, I miss this little booger, I call him that because he’s been sick lately and has a lot of boogers and snot.  :(   The cutest thing ever is that he’ll blow his nose so all this snot is hanging out and he’ll say “Blow, blow” so that you’ll bring him a tissue to blow out all his boogies.  A little TMI, but super cute.  :)   After having spending 4 days with my nephew, I kind of miss him, a lot.  We just always have so much fun together, can’t you tell?

Oh yea, here’s a peek at my new bangs and specs that I purchased at a swap meet for $4.  They kind of look cuter on Evan than me though, but I’m OK with that!  ;)   These photos were taken with my sister-in-law‘s iPhone, I kind of want one just for cool photo apps.  I mean who uses a phone for talking anyways, am I right?

Anywho, speaking of things that I love (i.e. my nephew), today I just wanted to share a Mac N Cheese recipe I made for my husband the other day!  It’s not just any old Mac N Cheese folks, it’s got bacon, mushrooms, chicken, tons of cheeses and a super special and kind of expensive ingredient, truffle oil;)   Here’s another similar one that’s not sold out already.  I had never used truffle oil or cooked with it before but I know how heavenly it tastes I figured there was a first time for everything!  This recipe was pretty much modeled after Yard House‘s amazing Mac N Cheese with a few tweaks!

Fancy Mac N Cheese

(adapted from food blahg)

Linking this photo up to:

Sweet Shot Day
Ingredients:

  • 1 lb elbow macaroni, cavatappi, cellantani, or other tubular pasta
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk, heated
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 8 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, grated
  • 4-6 ounces Gorgonzola cheese (or other blue variety), crumbled
  • 1 can chicken breast, or roasted (real) chicken breast, sliced
  • Salt, freshly ground black pepper, cayenne pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup fresh sourdough breadcrumbs
  • 10 slices bacon
  • Cremini mushrooms, as much or as little as you like, quartered
  • truffle oil for drizzling

Directions:

1. Fill a large pot with water and set it over high heat. Boil the pasta to slightly underdone (it will cook more in the oven); drain. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
2. As you’re waiting for the water to boil and the pasta to cook, be productive! Heat the milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat until barely simmering; remove from heat and set aside.
3. Process cubes of crusty sourdough bread (if it’s a day old, it’ll make it easier on you) — go ahead and process the crusts, too — until you have a cup of breadcrumbs. Set aside.

4. Start your roux: Melt 4 tablespoons of the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour; whisk to incorporate into the butter. Cook 1-2 minutes without over-browning. Add the milk and whisk to combine. Bring to a boil; remove from heat.
5. Add the cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses a large handful at a time; mix well.
6. Toss the pasta with the cheese mixture in a large bowl. Add the chicken now, if you got it from a can. Add it later if you’re using roasted chicken breast. Or you can add it now, whatever.
7. Fold in the Gorgonzola — 4 ounces if you like it mild, and up to 6 ounces if you prefer the potency. Add salt (keep in mind that you will be adding bacon later), freshly ground black pepper, and cayenne pepper to taste.Spray a large casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray, or grease with butter. Spread pasta mixture into dish; sprinkle breadcrumbs evenly over pasta. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the microwave and pour over breadcrumbs.

8. Bake in the oven, uncovered, for 40 minutes, or until top has browned.
9. While macaroni is baking, cook the bacon; drain on a paper towel. (Adding the bacon to the dish later will maintain its delightful crispiness.) Discard most, but not all, of the bacon drippings.
10. Brown the mushrooms in the remaining bacon drippings over medium-low heat. Add a pinch of salt to bring out a little of the moisture, but be wary not to make them soggy. They should be browned and fragrant, but still firm. Season with freshly ground black pepper.
11. When the macaroni is ready, serve some up in a bowl, and top with sliced roasted chicken breast, mushrooms, crumbled bacon and drizzle with truffle oil.

Are you hungry yet?  Because I am.  I think it’s about time I bake up another batch of these.  Marvin describes this dish as “decadent, scrumptious and indulgent”.  Are you going to make this already?

P.S. Are you ready for St. Patty’s Day yet?  Well if you’re not or you just love the color GREEN, I’m giving away a headband and a hairpin set over on Oh, Sweet Joy!  And btw, if you need a new crafty and inspirational blog to follow, you should definitely follow Oh, Sweet Joy! It’s a daily read of  mine!! :)

P.P.S. You still have 2 more days to enter a giveaway for this adorable Spring hairpin set over on Be merry, Kate!  And she definitely has an inspirational and happy blog as well that you should follow, kids.  Do it!

Keep Lookbook by a Nephew & Auntie

I am sooooo excited to kick off the week with some photos for a Lookbook (it was really just a photo shoot but I’ve always wanted to use this word, haha, and no, we weren’t paid/hired for this) that my sister-in-law photographed of me and my nephew in our new Keep shoes.  I had never heard of Keep shoes before my last trip to Los Angeles, but found out about it through a friend who works at the company (a friend that I happened to meet about 7 years ago at an Asian American conference, hi Jon)!  So on one Friday afternoon, my sister-in-law and I ventured down to the Hollywood area store location and spent an hour or so looking through all the shoes.  The style is very urban, hipster and trendy.  Cool thing is, all the shoes are unisex too!  So you and your man can have matching shoes!  ;)   We left the stores with a pair of shoes for my sister-in-law and me to share, a pair for Marvin and two little pairs for my nephew.  A few days later we headed to the middle of nowhere in Corona and had a little fun!

Here’s Evan’s first pair of shoes, the Guerra.  They were a size too big for him but we made it work.

Look at his little smile, makes my heart melt! <3

He’s quite the curious little boy, taking me in and under random structures!

And here are my shoes, The Benten, the style and colors match with Evan’s! :)

How perfect we found a random elephant on the ground, if you didn’t  know, Evan’s first birthday party was elephant (and other safari animals) themed!

My Outfit – Cardigan: Target, Tunic: Boutique in LA, Scarf: Burberry, Jeans: Express, Shoes: Keep

Loving the perspective of this shot!!

I just love the time we spend together bonding, nephew and auntie style.

Another sweet shot by my sis-in-law, you should follow her blog foreals, she always posts cute pictures of Evan!

Evan was really drawn to the elephant and we had fun jumping around!!

And here’s kid shoe #2, Benten style.  And if you didn’t notice, we had an outfit change. :) I just swapped the Target cardigan for a Target button down, if you can’t tell, I love Target.

And my fur-niece, Bella, decided to make an appearance too, *woof*

And quite possibly my FAVORITE PICTURE EVER… that’s my brother (sporting the Solis), Evan (with his belly showing and adorable smile) and me!

Thanks for being our awesome photographer, sis!  Thanks for introducing us to these awesome shoes, Jon!  And I’m so excited because I’m going to see my little Evan Bear next week again!! :)   Now everyone, go get yourself a pair of Keep shoes!
