In honor of May Giveaway Day on Sew, Mama, Sew!, I have paired together with Olive Manna to bring you an awesome giveaway! What is May Giveaway Day?? Well, it’s your lucky day. It means boat loads (we’re talking hundreds) of sewing, knitting, handcrafted related giveaways. And because I love hosting giveaways (and winning them too), you just know I had to participate~!
***************************
Natalie from Olive Manna is one of the most amazing bloggers I have met. She is a mother of three, designer of textiles, and a shop owner. You will be so impressed by all the things she sells in her shop, I sure was!! Some of the things you can find in there are journals, travel mugs, packaging goodies, melamine dishware, and FABRIC~! And you are in LUCK, we have paired together to bring you a FABRIC GIVEAWAY, but first, let’s get to know this amazing woman just a little bit better…
{Interview Questions}
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started Olive Manna?
I was a customer support rep for years, in retail, and in the office environment in various administrative or service positions, so it’s in my nature to make things happen for people. I started designing for the web in 2004 when someone saw my website and said, “Hey, you should DO this!” So I did.
In 2007 I was designing seamless patterns for website designs when someone said, “Hey, you should SELL these!” And I did. Then, in coming up with examples of how people could use the patterns, someone said, “You should MAKE these!”
The same thing happened with packaging supplies as I began ordering in bulk for myself and discovered other people who wanted the same things but didn’t want to pay the bulk prices. It all kind of snowballed for me.
The name was a curiously happy accident. It turns out my daughters’ names spell it out: Olivia (Olive), Emma (we call her M for short), and Audrey ANNA.
2. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I don’t really draw inspiration – it draws me! I think Jeffrey Zeldman said it fantastically recently in a brief [public] twitter conversation with Todd Dominey
> JZ: The conscious mind deals with what is in front of you, the unconscious processes what has yet to be behind you.
> TD: Unconscious mind also processes what the conscious mind can’t solve. Love those early morning eurekas. 🙂
> JZ: Too true! My few good ideas have come to me in a flash (i.e. the unconscious solved them and hid its rough drafts from me).
See, my unconscious mind deals with all that stuff for me and just doesn’t let me see the work at play, then one day, BAM!
Travel Mug | Shopping List Notebook | Melamine Plates
3. What is a day in the life of a twin mommy + shop owner like?
I wake up as late as I can because to say I’m not a morning person is to say there are a lot of blogs on the internet. I get Audrey Anna on the bus for school and then take some quiet time to read or check email and orders that came in overnight.
Then most of the day is picking up toys, playing peek-a-boo, puzzles, a little toddler wrestling, picking up toys, cleaning, preparing meals, picking up toys…
During naptime I process orders and get them in the mailbox before the mailman comes, and if there’s time I work on new designs or make more product to stock.
AJ comes home from school around the end of naptime. We have an afternoon snack and do homework together just before the twins get up. Then we play till Dad comes home.
Then it’s dinner, baths, and goofing around till the kids’ bedtime around 7:30, 8 on weekends. Later, I either run out to do late errands, groceries, etc. and stay up late designing new stuff, ordering supplies, and checking email one last time. I watch a late movie after Dad goes to sleep, and if I’m lucky, I go out early around midnight (hence the early morning angst)!
Divine Twine | Folded Notes | Clothespins
4. In your mind, what is the perfect way to decorate a package?
These days, with all the beautiful bright designs in gift wrap, a simple package really stands out. A plain white or kraft wrapping paper becomes a beautiful backdrop for decorating in other ways, like with colored or patterned tags and ribbons, or I like to experiment with different textures too, like jute twine instead of basic cotton. It’s how I started selling them.
There is no perfect way to do it, just something that’s different from everyone else. At showers, weddings, birthdays, I remember there was always one gift that seemed to be wrapped differently and I was always more curious about that one, couldn’t wait to open it, or didn’t want to open but just stared at the pretty packaging. I like to give that reaction now.
I especially love the look of a translucent paper over a pretty gift. It just begs to be opened!

Oooh, pretty! I have a purse pattern and have been giving lots of thought into the fabric I would choose to make it with. And I was thinking that I wanted to make a purse for me and a matching skirt for my little girl. So we could match without being totally matchy matchy. I think this might be just right for that.
Fingers crossed!
what wouldn’t i use that for?? It would be a great contrasting fabric for my closet redo. my closet is currently the nicest room in the entire house….as it should be. my closet is a georgeous bright blue/green, nearly turquoise with sliver and white accents. this would go great as a cover up over the boring canvas boxes i have for hat boxes for off season storage.
What a fun and generous giveaway! I would probably use this material to make a purse for myself. Also, I’d probably make my niece a cute little dress or top!
there is a bag of at sisters of that i really want to make. this fabric would be perfect.

I’ve been looking for a pin-up board to hang above my desk but haven’t found the right one. I could make my own using this gorgeous fabric!
Well I think I would make a beautiful bag out of that fabric. It is hard to find a nice deep eggplant and that colour is so lovely.
Love that unique pattern–perfect to make the tunic dress pattern that I’ve had for a couple of months (looks like something Tory Burch would have). Haven’t used the pattern yet cause I haven’t found an inspiring fabric–until now! I’d accent the tunic neck & sleeves w/white to make the design really pop out!

gorgeous, gorgeous fabric! i’d love to use it as a quilt backing. thanks for the great giveaway!
I see a skirt in my future……
Thanks!
I’d make an apron to giveaway on my blog.
I tweeted. mypursuitof
I’d love to match a patchwork bag. I have some purple fabric that I think would go with it.
THIS IS WONDERFUL FABRIC! I think it is something that would make a great and fun piece of clothing… maybe a skirt because the pattern, from what I can see, would be too much for a full dress… but I love it!!
I’m a sucker for quilt fabric, but I think I’d make a skirt…
Oh no, too cute!! Umm, I might make a swaddling blanket for my friend’s new baby. Or a market bag. Or… how can you choose?
What a great giveaway! Thank you for the chance to win! I think it is the perfect fabric to start work on a chevron quilt, or maybe a penant themed pillow.
I love everything Natalie does!!! I would love to sew pillowcases with those cuties!
GAAA! Totally going in my nine-patch. LOOOOVE deep purple, coupled with white is even better, that it consists of bold graphic elements = JOY 🙂
I owe my younger daughter a name pennant like her big sister has, and I think this would be really cute for some of the flags!!!
Oh yes! I would make a skirt! http://www.chicaandjo.com/2009/05/28/sew-a-tiered-ruffled-skirt for me or my daughter – Too awesome!
Thanks fo the giveaway! Off to the Olive Blog!

oohhh! this fabric is so adorable!
i think i would use it as accent fabric on a tote bag! or a pillow case :]
I’ve never made a dress for myself, but if 2 yards would be enough, I’d use it for a dress! Or maybe a shirt. Or a skirt. Or some pillows. The possibilities are so endless! Great giveaway!!

I would love to make an adorable summer apron. Or maybe a cute pillow for my new red couches 🙂 Thanks for the chance to enter!!
Oh I would have to make a quilt and binding with the fabric.
A tote bag, or maybe some pillows…it’s so cute!
A skirt would be cute! Thanks for the giveaway!
I am not sure of a pettern right now but it would be worked into a quilt. carolyn
fabulous fabric!
I would use it in a thick width in a strip quilt! and then also a pieced back!
great giveaway! thanks for the chance to win! crossing my fingers!
Thank you for the condition that we have to use it because that will be just the motivation I need to do so. My two year old daughter said I could make a shirt and a bag with it.
A bag would be nice, but I’d probably hoard it for a while! 😉
Oh wonderful! I would love to use it to make a sleeeless top for me! I’d have a half-yard left over to do something extra creative with then… I saw someone made a little purse with two FQ’s so maybe I’d try my hand at a small bag too! And I LOVE Olive Manna! The last package I got in the mail was my order from Olive Manna – it was so lovely and Natalie was so sweet! Wonderful giveaway and interview – thanks!
I’m such a sucker for pennants right now! It would surely be destined to be a quilt back because a) deep purple is so beautiful and unexpected and b) it’s pennants! You should be able to see it in all it’s glory.
Oooh, it reminds me a little bit of sunflowers. That reminds me I need to go plant my garden. Two full yards is so generous! It would make a really fun apron.
Since I can’t quite tell what color the purple is on my monitor, I think I’d have to wait until I saw it to make a decision. But it’s lovely!
I think I’d make a few pillows out of it for my couch at work. It would go well. Or maybe just a skirt for me… probably that.

I would love to make a full skirt out of this gorgeous material! I would also make a tank…it would be great with dark jeans and a black cardigan at work.
Fingers crossed!!
I need to make a toy bag or toy bags for my son. I think I would use this material in that project. But it would also make a cute skirt or something for me. I’m still undecided, but I will use it. Thank you for the chance to win. stephspitzer at gmail dot com
A matching dress/skirt for my little one and me and maybe has some extra for a pillow. Awesome giveaway!
