Dear Austin: One Week

6 lbs. 7 oz. | 20.5 inches

Dear Austin,

I can’t believe we’ve made it ONE WEEK already.  Time, compared to the end of pregnancy, has just flown right by.  The love that I have for you is beyond measurable.  This past week has probably been one of the toughest weeks of both our lives but take comfort in knowing that things will get better.  Ever since we came home from the hospital, you’ve been a bit fussy and we couldn’t figure out why.  It took us a few days to realize that I wasn’t producing any milk so you were always hungry.  After we talked to the doctor, we increased your feedings with a formula supplement to what a normal newborn should be eating and THAT is when things immediately turned for the better.  We were both able to sleep more and you immediately become a more content baby.  Hopefully at your next doctor’s appointment we will see some weight gain!  But for now, just trust in Mommy that you will get the food you need to grow up.

Some of our favorite things about you are well everything… but in particular… your hairy back and legs, your forehead wrinkles, how you try to keep your eyes open after a feeding even though you are so tired, and your sweet demeanor.  You love listening to your Grandma’s singing voice, laying in Grandpa’s comfy arms, and Daddy’s bedtime stories.  You don’t like it when people touch your feet but it’s my secret weapon for trying to keep you awake while feeding.  😉

Love,

Mommy

(Birth story still to come!)

He is so precious, Mama! Sorry to hear about the fussiness – I had the same problem with both Josiah and Lucia. After nursing for about 8 weeks with each of them, I finally gave in and did formula full-time because I was never able to produce enough. The first time I gave each of them a full bottle of formula was the first time they slept a 5-6 hour stretch. It was awesome. haha Keep up the good work, Mama! You are doing great! 🙂

He is so stinkin’ cute! Congratulations on the beautiful addition.

As for your milk supply (and I am sure you have heard all of this before) but I would try fenugreek, mother’s milk tea, and pumping between feedings to help increase your supply. Those have helped most people I know.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world motherhood, it’s a pretty darn cool club to belong to 😉

HellOOO Austin!! Oh he is precious! Welcome to motherhood!

  25. January 5, 2012 / 3:38 pm

This is exactly what happened with us: our little one went from 8 lbs 8 oz to 7 lbs 8 oz bc my supply wasn’t in quickly enough. We continued to BF, but also supplemented with formula for 3 weeks after to be sure to establish my supply.

After a very rocky first month of BFing, I’ve now been nursing exclusively for 4 1/2 months.

I highly recommend Mother’s Milk tea. Be SURE to drink at least 3 cups/day. Any less won’t make a big enough difference in your supply.

If you need any encouragement, or have any questions, just email me. I’ve just been through all of this, so it’s very fresh.

he’s so sweet. I’ve changed my mind, i think he looks more like hi dad 🙂 I’m glad things are going better. one of my cousins had he little Nelson on the same day as you and she also had a first few days. Once you get a little routing going, you’ll be able to figure out you little guys needs better. even though they don’t talk, we moms figure quite fast what their non verbal communication means. hang in there and enjoy, because as you say time flies and pretty soon they’re running around. big hugs to you three

Welome baby Austin and congrats to making it to one week old and congrats to the parents who made it too!
The first born is always the hardest because it’s your first everything! Enjoy the journey and take it one day at a time.

  42. January 10, 2012 / 6:09 pm

Love that pillow you have him on! He’s gonna be bigger than that thing before you know it 😉 or at least be able to drag it around before you know it!

One of the things the nurses told me after having my boy was that when we take him home we will think we have a completely different baby. Babies just cry…its what they do…its how they communicate…but man, we thought something was wrong. Nope, just normal… it was awful until about 6 months when it gets so much better! I love him always though!

  43. January 12, 2012 / 4:25 pm

This is such a lovely post & something you will definitely treasure as he grows! 🙂
