Hi there, Kristin from BonBon Rose Girls here. I’m elated to be guest posting on Sandy’s lovely blog while she’s enjoying the bliss that comes with being a new mama!

I thought I would share with you a trend that I’m really looking forward to rockin’ this spring. I know…I know…Most of you are firmly entrenched in frigid winter weather and can’t even think about what you’re going to wear come spring. Think of this post as a mini vacay. Forget about the snow outside and imagine yourself in warmer weather…And if you’re really adventurous, consider sporting this spring trend NOW! Which spring trend am I talking about? Pastels of course!

steve madden dynamite sandel

I just love a beautifully feminine sorbet hue, especially when we’re talking about footwear. This pair of Steve Maddens comes in a fabulous array of pastels. Whether coral, mint or lavender is your poison, the Steve Madden Dynamite Sandel has you covered!

So, which color would you go for lovelies?

my beautiful sister and me (rocking out the sequined, glitter!) on New Year’s Day
Hello, dear friends of Sandy! My name is Ilene, the voice over at Much Love, illy blog and the artist behind the Much Love, illy shop. Sandy has been one of my dearest blog and real life friends since the summer of 2010 when we had a meet-up back in Chicago. We have kept in constant contact (check our history via text messaging, tweets, and emails!) and have had the chance to co-host the annual Cold Hands, Warm Hearts Swap. Knowing Sandy has been nothing but awesomeness – I love you, girl!

So of course, I was in absolute glee when she called me up to tell me the fantastic news that she was preggo! And of course even more ecstatic when Baby Austin made he’s appearance into the world. With a brand new year and brand new babies and brand new everything, it totally puts me into a party mood! And what party isn’t a party without glitter?! glitter has been an obsession of mine since the holiday kicked off and my obsession over it continues into this new year. here are some of my top favorites!

1. glitter shoes DIY via Beautiful Mess – I am completely obsessed with this DIY that I discovered over at the talented Elsie’s blog. Once i find myself a low-key weekend, this is one DIY I totally want to try. Then maybe head off to a party with these new kicks – or McDonalds, whichever comes first.

2. Emella Sequined Skirt via Shopkempt – This baby has been on my wishlist for quite some time now. Pair it with a collared white shirt or with a sheer top. I think the shade of copper is fantastic, and the shape oh so flattering!

3. Pink Women’s Glitter shoes via TOMS – These are TOMS. Need I say more? Comfort and sophistication in one pair of shoes – and for a good cause (for every pair or TOMS shoes, a child of need will receive a new pair of shoes!), even better!

4. glitter half moon manicure via Pinterest and Lyndar the merciless – As a mad lover of nailpolish, this manicure totally rang in my new year! I love the elegance of the glitter and the black, but I can see this working with bold, striking colors for the spring season!

What about you? Yay or nay on the glitter obsession?
If so, what are your favorites when it comes to all things glitter?
Like I said, I’m obsessed so I wanna know!

Thanks for having me, Sandy!
Love you and your beautiful family so stinkin’ much, it’s ridiculous!

much love, ilene (aka illy)

Tips for Photographing your Baby by Simplyvonne

Well hello there! Nice to meet you! My name is Yvonne and I blog over at simplyvonne.  I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be a guest host for Sandy today. I have been a fan of Sandy’s blog for quite some time now and it’s an honor to be here sharing with you few tips on photography. I am not an expect on photography nor am I a professional photographer but I found these tips actually works for me. I have always enjoy photography but never got into it until my baby girl was born last year. It actually took me a whole year to finally play around with the manual mode! I am still really new at photography and still learning as I go.

{ Read Your Manual } Before you start photographing your baby, the first thing you should do is read your manual. I get it that reading your manual is completely boring but you don’t have to read it from cover to cover. At least 10 pages ;)

{ Light It Up } When shooting indoor, I usually position Kaylee by the window. I don’t have any fancy flash equipment so I love using natural light. When I do shoot Kaylee outside, I normally shoot really early morning or later afternoon around sunset so your photos would have harsh lighting.

{ Getting the Details }

Babies are tiny for a very short period of time. I like to focus on their feet, toes, hands, eyes and even accessories. Don’t be afraid to get close and focus on the little details. Shallow depth of fields creates a mood of tenderness and intimacy.

{ To Their Level }

Sometimes the best shot is the one where you are laying down on your tummy to take it ;) Don’t be afraid to get down and dirty. Try kneeling or lying beside your baby and shoot from there.

{ Work Around Your Baby’s Schedule }

The key to have a happy and smiling baby in photos is to work around their schedule. Ohh yes…there were numerous time I was so ready to take photos but if she’s into it, just have to wait another day. Kaylee is usually smiling for the camera once she got her nap in and tummy is all full!

{ Edit, Edit, Edit }

Let’s be honest, my photos are not cool before editing them. I edit all my photos in photoshop. I normally brighten up the eyes and using various actions on my photos. I love using Totally Rad Actions You can download some free actions at Pioneer Woman. She has great tips on photography as well!

When I first started, my photos were really dark and I was shooting in auto mode for a year. My interest in photography grew because I want to be able to take nice quality photos for our baby girl. Practice is the key and don’t give up. Don’t expect to capture that perfect shot the first time, try different angles and different positions. Impromptu shots sometimes creates the best picture.

Like I mentioned, I am not a professional photographer and there’s so much to learn, I simply enjoy taking photos of our baby girl and I think she’ll enjoy looking at these 18 years from now. Thank you so much for having me Sandy, I cant wait to see photos of baby boy a la mode!

Head over to my blog, baby girl and I would love to meet you! See more photos of baby K here :)

There were so many fun trends in 2011! Its always fun to see a trend cross over fashion and interiors:) My personal favorite was the black and gold frenzy that has hit the styling scene everywhere! Its a great color palate to bring in the new year!

Embracing My Scars by Casey Wiegand

My name is Casey Wiegand, I am a freelance artist, wife and mama.
I love painting and sharing our life through my blog…where you can expect pieces of my perspective on life, faith, kids, marriage, with touches of art, creative inspiration, projects and things I love along the way. I have two little ones with the hopes of lots more and am married to the love of my life!

Any C-section mamas out there? Any of you look at/see/ notice your scars everytime you are getting ready/ showering, etc?

Well, I do.
I love my scar. I love what it represents.
Photobucket
I love that long after my children are grown, I will still have my scar from my 2 previous c-sections (and however many more). I love that it is a daily reminder to me of the 2 little lives I have to take care of & think about.
Scars represent beautiful things. They make us who we are.
What about our emotional scars? We all have them. Some run deeper than others…some change us for better and some create walls in us.
Our scars make us who we are, don’t they?
When I started blogging it was because I found this quote:

“I find beauty in not only the beautiful things in life, but the bittersweet and sad as well. To me, there is something poignantly lovely about the human experience from its splendor to its grief. God created all our emotions, not just the happy ones, and for His good purposes. That’s why a good cry can feel so good. And hitting our limits forces us to look outside ourselves for a Savior. It is in the plea, when we’re at our end, that we can find that which is truly life-giving. Personally, my moments of deepest grief, deepest pain, have resulted in the most beautiful seasons in my heart. I’ve met God more intimately in those moments than in all the other pleasant ones combined. What isn’t completely lovely about that?”
Leslie.
Photobucket
I was going through a hard time and something about this quote gave me hope. And peace. And then the entire blogging experience and community pulled me out. Into a better place.

Now…just months later, here I am embracing the scars… letting my hurt make me lovely.

I realized something along the way. I am better off with my hurt. My past. Embracing all that has happened and allowing it to make me a better me :)

Outfit + Recipe by Bon Chic Bon Gastronomique

Bonjour
Sandy à la Mode readers, I’m Shea from
Bon Chic Bon Gastronomique. I’m so
excited to be able to guest post for Sandy while she’s enjoying her time as a new
mommy (or while she’s enjoying her last few weeks of pregnancy…depending on
just how cozy baby à la mode is)!

I thought I’d share with you all a favorite go-to outfit and dinner idea for a chilly day. I
don’t know about you, but for me, having a few easy ideas at my fingertips is essential this
time of year. Adding holiday parties, gift shopping, and family get-togethers
to an already busy schedule leaves little time to spend on outfit coordinating
and meal planning.

Sweater: Isaac Mizrahi for Target (old); camisole: Old Navy; jeans: Express; scarf: Loft; shoes: Merona, Target

One of my favorite cold-weather combinations is a bold colored sweater, a contrasting
scarf, jeans, and a fun pair of flats or low heels. I always stock up on
solid-colored sweaters, especially during sales, so that I can do several
different versions of this combination. A scarf keeps me warm and toasty, but
it can easily be removed if someone has her heater working overtime.

When it comes to weeknight meals, my philosophy is the simpler the better this time of
year. When it starts getting dark at five, I’d much rather spend my evening
sipping hot cocoa than working in a hot kitchen. That’s why stir-fries are a Godsend.
This version, Spicy Tangerine Beef from Guy Fieri, is quick and easy, but
elegant enough to impress your friends. And it’s easy to swap out the
ingredients to make this meal fit what’s on sale or what you’re in the mood
for.

So, what go-to recipes, for style or for food, are you relying on this time of year?
-Shea

Holiday Cupcake Flags Printable by Yellow Heart Art

Tomorrow’s my due date but baby is still warm and cozy in my belly! :)

Waddup guys! I’m Leonora over at Yellow Heart Art! I’m a graphic designer by day and a super hero by night (ok, thats a lie) (or is it?) (maybe I just need to keep my identity hidden for the sake of justice) (guess you’ll never know now, huh?)  I make pretty things all day over here & I ramble on and on and on about life over here.  Let’s get to know one another better, shall we? (bee tee dubs who invented the word “Shall” anyway? It’s like that word that you say 3 times in a row and it looses all meaning…go on, try it. I’ll wait.) (see it was weird, right?) (ok, moving on) (sandy, do you regret asking me to guest post for ya yet?)

Well, some random info about me is that I tend to never let food fully finish “cooling off” before I dive into it, so I am always burning my mouth. (what? I like to eat) I own so many hair accessories I could wear a new headband every day for a year (I am not proud of this fact by the way, but it is a fact none-the-less) I am pretty sure Jim Halpert and I are meant to be besties for life and whenever I pluck my eyebrows I always sneeze (tell me this happens to you too)When Sandy asked me to guest post for her while she is busy giving birth to pint sized a la mode I was so thrilled because I knew EXACTLY what I wanted to blog about!(Let me set the scene) Ok so check it–it’s the holidays. The in-laws are staying at your place (again). You’ve asked the hubs for, like, the 10th time to set up the table for dessert (it seems like time #10 is always the magical number to get men to do something) but he’s too busy shaking all the gifts and peeling back the paper to see what it is he got for christmas (yes ladies, men don’t grow up, they just get bigger)In a panic you realize that nit picky mother in law is going to rip apart your sad little white frosted cupcakes.Do you freak out? No. Do you start to sweat a little? No. Do you start to have heart palpitations? Maybe. But what do you do? You run into the office, sign on to sandyalamode.com, go to this post, right click on my printable below, save it to your desk top, print it, cut out the flags, fold them in half around a tooth pick, glue together and stab into your plain white cupcakes.

BAM. Christmas is the bomb dot com all thanks to you (and me) (see, I am a super hero)

Also? Your cupcakes will thank you as well.

Hey, let’s be besties! Stalk me over here:

Thank you so much Sandy for letting me be a part of your little home in cyber space! Good luck with mini a la mode!! <3

Feather Tree DIY by Cotton Lane

We’re a couple days away from due date, but still no baby yet.  He’s just chilling comfortably in my belly still!  :)

Hi Sandy a la Mode readers!
My name is Caroline and I am the crazy person behind the shop Cotton Lane and the author of the blog, Good Times Never Seem Sew Good.  When I’m not blogging about my life a as a newly wed, DIYs, fashion (sort of), and other tid bits, I am either busy creating fresh goodies for my handmade shop or working non stop at a local fabric store.  Are you tired yet? :)   Today I want to show you to to make this CUTE feather tree.  I was at Victoria’s Secret the other day and saw a huge tree made sort of like this and thought, “I can do that!”  So, with a few added elements from myself, I did just that!
null
what you need:
styrofoam tree shape (found in the floral department of Hobby Lobby)
a few bags of feathers
a medium-sized ornament
glitter spray paint
a hot glue gun
your blow dryer
Photobucket
start at the bottom and hot glue the feathers to the styrofoam. only glue down the tops to allow the bottoms to flare out a bit.
Photobucket
glue, glue, glue all the way to the top!
Photobucket
then detach the metal part of the ornament (on the top) and hot glue it to the tip top of your tree.  (I shoved mine in to where the ball part touches the tree.)
Photobucket
then head outside and give your tree a light coat of glitter spray paint.  This just adds a little pizzaz to it.  The feathers will seem to be stuck.  No problem.  Turn your tree upside down and use a blow dryer on a low setting and blow the “limbs” (feathers) towards the top.  This helps them flare out and look like a tree!
Photobucket
once you’re finished, display it in your home & be proud of your work!
Photobucket
Happy crafting & Merry Christmas!!
xoxo,
Caroline

P.S. If you blog over at Suburban Sweetheart, then CONGRATS!  You are the winner of the Cotton Lane giveaway! Email me your mailing address at sandyalamode(at)gmail(dot)com and I’ll pass it on to Caroline! :)
