Hey all!  Another weekend has passed and what a fun and relaxing one it was for us.  We had our third and final baby shower / housewarming party on Saturday (will share pics with you later) and on Sunday we went for a hospital tour and just relaxed.  What did I do with my extra hour?  I napped on the couch, oh yea, and it felt good.

So I actually have quite a few posts backed up or things to share with you (that’s always a better feeling than have a lack of posts), so for today, I just wanted to show the pictures from my best friend / Twinny’s wedding.  I posted about her Wedding Rehearsal + Dinner a couple weeks ago, remember?

{CEREMONY}

Here we all are, waiting for the beautiful bride to make her way down the aisle.

So sweet and emotional, she was crying on the way down, and so was I!

It was a beautiful ceremony with a couple speeches and a tea ceremony.

The kiss and broom jumping!  (All the ceremony pictures taken by hubby!)

{RECEPTION}

The Colony Club in downtown Detroit is beautiful, isn’t it?

And bubble tea was served at the cocktail hour.  Bubble tea guys, LOVE IT!  Mmmm I want some more now!

Picture table… yup, the couple has met Obama before!

What a lovely first dance!

Some sappy and funny speeches!

And cupcakes for dessert, YUM!

Decided to switch to flash as the room got darker and the dancing began!  Here’s the 3 of us.  :)

The infamous and growing P.Crew family.  LOVE.

Congrats to Steph and Sean!  Wishing you two a lifetime of happiness, laughter, kitten cuddles, cozy nights with your record player, and tons of cute babies.  ;)

Remember a few weeks ago when I blogged about a Purple and Green Bridal Shower?  Well the wedding happened a few weeks ago and everything went perfectly!  The weather was hot and sunny, I got to see a ton of my college buddies, and I was right there standing by my friend Christine’s side as she married the love of her life!

The wedding was held at the beautiful Cranbrook House and Gardens.

Look at the huge bridal party – they were a lot of fun!

The father if the bride escorting the beautiful bride down the aisle!

A beautiful ceremony later, they kissed and were married!

Love the bridesmaid’s dresses and flowers!

And I was a HUGE fan of my makeup and waterfall braid hairstyle as well!  :)

Me and baby daddy! ;)

Her dress was SO stunning and I loved that the groom wore grey!

Signing the guest book.

Really amazing dessert spread, yum!!

Father-daughter and mother-son dances.

The infamous PCrew family + significant others.  :)

Probably one of the best parts of this wedding was the surprise flashmob that many of the guests participated in.  We spent the few days leading up to the wedding preparing for this big debut!  The bride and groom were thoroughly shocked!  :)

And while I still have your attention, I just wanted to announce the WINNER of the Shabby Apple giveaway!  If your name is Cindy and you’re the owner of the blog Tea-House Moon, CONGRATS!!!  Please email me at sandyalamode(at)gmail(dot)com with your dress or skirt selection and your mailing address!

My Mind is Pinned on Summer

First off, I have a GIVEAWAY WINNER to announce!  Thank you to all who helped celebrate the two year blogiversary of Lola’s Girl!  As you know, she was giving an awesome Polaroid camera and a winner has been picked.  If you are the owner of City Life To Ranching Wife blog, then CONGRATS!  Please email me your mailing address to sandyalamode(at)gmail(dot)com and we’ll get the camera sent right out to ya! Can’t wait to see the pictures you take with it!  :)

This week I’ve had my mind on nothing but summer.  Did ya know it will be here in just a few days?  And even cooler, it will be the longest DAY of the year.  Oh how I heart daylight (crossing my fingers that next Tuesday is sunny)!  And it didn’t help that I finally renewed my interest for using Pinterest again.  Well to be honest, I signed up last August in order to do my Pin It Forward post but haven’t touched it since.  Not because I don’t like using it, but quite the opposite, I know that every time I go there I could be sucked away for hours… and that is just what happened this week haha.  It’s a place to be inspired and inspire others!  I like the fact that you can create categories or “boards” as they call it.  And here are a few of my favorites this week from my different boards, and they all pretty much scream summer to me!

{fashion} | {for the home} | {favorite places and spaces}

{food and drink} | {beauty and makeup} | {party and decorations}

Aren’t these all so fun? The shoes… amazing!  The kitchen… so colorful!  The over water bungalow… can I just be there right now?  The fruit kabobs… mmm tasty!  The waterfall braid… so elegant!  The bouquet… perfect summer palette!  :)

OK, well I’m off to Michigan for my college roommate’s purple and green wedding this weekend!  So excited, especially for the cupcake dessert!  ;)   Have a great weekend all!

Are you on Pinterest?  If so, you should follow me!  And if you aren’t on Pinterest but would like an invite, let me know!

Miscellany Monday @ lowercase letters

1. the girl who can’t put the book down.

i’m not normally a bookworm as my attention span is like that of a goldfish.  i usually spend my free time reading blogs (duh!) or watching tv as those activities don’t generally take more than a few hours.  however when i’m stuck on an airplane with tv or internet, i find that it’s the best time for me to catch up on books.  a few weeks ago i picked up the girl with the dragon tattoo and started reading it, i didn’t get very far as the book has a pretty slow start.  and just this past week i decided to give it another chance, rereading it from the beginning.  i read 1/3 on the way to phoenix, a 1/3 on the way back home, and 1/3 the following day in my living room.  let me just say, once you get into it, you can’t put it down.  and now i can’t wait to read the girl who played with fire.

2. want a ticket to ride?

a few months ago, marvin picked up the game ticket to ride.  it’s a cross-country adventure where players collect train cards and try and routes on railways.  goal is to get the most number of points by completing destination tickets, completing long routes, and block your opponents.  this game totally brings out the competitive side in me.  have you played before?  what are your best strategies?

3. keeping vampires away

last friday, marvin and i decided to use one of our many groupons by heading to a local joint, big baby’s pizzeria.  best thing on the menu?  roasted garlic with romano cheese and olive oil smeared on french bread. i’m determined to make a version of my own because it’s that tasty.  and it’ll keep the vampires away, score!

{image}

4. table numbers as tv shows

on saturday we attended my friend’s wedding reception in kc.  instead of having table numbers, they marked each table by tv shows on their dvr.  our table was breakout kings (i’ve never heard of this show but maybe i’ll give it watch sometime).  what else was so cool about this wedding?  it overlooked the city, they served sorbet as a palette cleanser before dinner, and there was a chocolate fondue station.  so fun!

5. words with friends

as if i weren’t glued to my phone enough, here’s another reason i am.  if you want a sure win, leave a comment with your username so i can start a game with you.  i’m a noob.

6. your turn.  tell me something random!

Two years ago (May 16, 2009 to be exact), I married my best friend, my man, my monkey, and my companion.  Since then, we’ve moved in together, renovated a basement, saw tons of family and friends get married, became an auntie/uncle, traveled a ton, but most importantly we’ve gotten to experience what being a husband/wife are all about and have learned so much about and from each other.  Marvin is the reason I get so excited to come home from work or the airport.  When I’m home, he’s the first person I see when I wake up in the morning and that always puts a smile on my face.  Life has become so much more meaningful with him always by my side.  And with that, I’ll leave you with a few pictures to show how we’ve evolved in the past two years.

A few days ago at a friend’s wedding with the Kansas City Country Club Plaza in the background!

Marvin and I are always excited to give each other gifts that we always end up doing it early.  So you see that necklace I am wearing in the last picture, it was my two year anniversary present, my first ever David Yurman jewelry!  Here’s a close-up shot of it, the center stone is a perfect prasiolite (green-quartz) surrounded by diamonds, I love it!!!

So to celebrate this milestone, we’ve decided to take a vacation day and go out and enjoy each other, our city, and our love for each other.  I’m most looking forward to our dinner, where we plan on going to check out the newest Brazilian Steakhouse in town… and I hope you know what that means… we’ll be eating for hours until we’re stuffed silly.  :D

{MEET TANIA}

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi, my name is Tania Maras and I’m based in Canberra, Australia. I work full time during the day and I create my pieces late into the evenings and on weekends. Life is really busy but I love what I do so it never feels like ‘work’. I love to travel, I wish I could cook, I have a wonderfully supportive partner, and I have the cutest chocolate Labrador pup named Bear.

2) How did you get into making such beautiful wedding accessories?
I taught myself how to sew just over 2 years ago and my first projects were pouches and clutch purses. They were so much fun to make and before I knew it, I started to develop a following of brides and bridesmaids seeking to use my pieces for their weddings and formal occasions. I became obsessed with making pretty flowers and feather pieces and it wasn’t too long before a line of bridal accessories quickly developed.

3) What are some of your favorite color combos for weddings?
This is a tough question! I think my favourites are:
- pewter grey, charcoal grey, and lemon or mustard yellow
- nudes and black
- chartreuse and yellow greens and taupe

This weekend, one of my best friends is getting married and I couldn’t be happier that I’ll be standing by her on her big day.  We’ve been friends for more than half our lives and she’s been my partner in crime in our teenage years.  We used to dance Chinese folk dances together and then subsequently in our high school years when most kids were out playing we taught younger kids how Chinese folk dancing as well.  We dyed our hair together, we got piercings together, and even went to the Rose Bowl together too!  Like I said, our friendship goes wayyy back!

So excuse me if I’m MIA all weekend as I’ll be in Vegas with my best friend as she marries the man of her dreams!  :)   But I won’t leave you empty handed, here is a look at their New York City engagement pictures photographed by the amazing Jeramie Shoda!

Aren’t they the cutest?  I am loving all the great backdrops that define New York City.  To check out more photos from this amazing session, head on over to Shoda Love blog!

Oh yes, and I have the Livy Love Designs giveaway winner to announce!  The winner is Connie from Daydream in Color, congrats!  Connie – please email me at sandyalamode(at)gmail(dot)com and I’ll get you hooked up with Diana so she can send you the print of your choice!

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Speaking of my shop, it’s about time I share some customer photos.  It always makes me giddy inside when I see my friends sporting handmade creations made by moi!  First off… we have the bow that pretty much defines my shop, the mustard lacey, which comes in bow clip or headband form!

1 Love how colorful Adventures in Love and Happiness’ outfit is!
2 Selective Potential matched a mustard skirt and lace top with the bow… how perfect is that?
3 Totally adore how The Violet Reaction wore her bow with her hair up and isn’t her purse too cute?
4 Teehee, love that Freckled Italian sent me a phone pic!  She’s cuuuute!
5 Yellow Heart Art is hysterical, charming, sweet, and a great designer! And she’s fashionable too!

And we have some of  my other items modeled here:

6 Goose and Lovie kept her hair out of her face with a vintage pearl pin!
7All Kinds of Complicated sported a bow to put her hair half up!

Cleveland, OH (multiple trips)
Orlando, FL (multiple trips)

In between my busy travel schedule, my husband and I finished renovating our basement!!  As in… we began with wood paneling and water seeping through the walls in July 2009…

to foundation repairs, sump pump added, putting up drywall…

Photography Advice by Rebel Belle Photography

Today’s guest post is brought to you by the lovely Casie of Rebel Belle Photography!  I had the pleasure of meeting Casie in person just the other day in Orlando (you can check SoNg Designs for a pic)!  She has such a hilarious, fun, laid back, and chill personality!  If you are interesting in being a photographer, then read on to see how Casie made her start and she leaves us with some great advice too!

***

My photographic love affair began much like that of any other kid:

A cup of coffee was never just a brewed cup of caffeinated beans.  No, to me it was art.

Laughter wasn’t just a reaction, but rather a fragment in time that needed to be savored.  Captured, and relived as frequently as possible.

And details…details so intricately woven that most people would miss them with a mere blink of an eye?  Left a resonating beat in my heart.

I graduated high school, like any 18 year old kid – bright eyed, and guns blazing – declaring to people that I, Casie Shimansky, was going to be a photographer.  Was I going to school for photography?  Heck no.  I was going for general education!  But, I knew that it wasn’t something I wanted to be TOLD how to do anyway.  Photography – like any art form, like any moment in life, and any true passionate love story must be EXPERIENCED, not defined.  Must be LIVED, not instructed.

I wasn’t always the girl with the camera though.  You see, there was a day, and a time, and a place where not EVERYONE had a camera.  It would take me another four years to see the light, because I simply had no other option.  In April of 2004, my younger sister Kellie became ill and passed away unexpectedly, within a week.  Life after Death is…odd.  Fuzzy.  It’s light and dark.  It is every bit of a Fish-Eye Lens; never quite right, and never quite wrong.  For me, it was a trigger.  A trigger that sounded faintly like the click of a shutter button.

Photography chose me; it is as simple and as complicated as that.  That one moment changed everything in my life.  The entire earth seemed to shift, and it catapulted me to here and now.

It was as if before that moment I was a single pane of glass – pretty and untouched; even afraid of breaking from time to time.   Entirely transparent.  But now, I am this intense mosaic.  Pieces and fragments have become something so much more “whole” than I could’ve ever imagined.  I know exactly what these pieces are capable of too.  They are somehow prettier to me than just one singular, untouched pane of glass.

If life had just thrown me a curveball, photography was my homerun.

The best camera, I believe, is the one that you have on you.  The one that you can afford.  If you have the talent?  The true eye of a photographer?  Equipment is nothing.  Equipment enables you to participate in this art; it doesn’t make you or break you by any means.  You can have the best equipment, and still go nowhere.  You can have the “worst” equipment and still stretch it to unknown limits.  You won’t hear that from too many photographers.  And to be honest, it’s probably why it took me so long to start, because all these other photographers were telling ME that I NEEDED the $10,000 body style in order to be any kind of photographer who knows anything about something.

I’m here to tell you that that is a load of ca-ca.  If you have talent — if, in your heart, you are a photographer — you’re going to take amazing works of art with ANY camera because you simply cannot imagine your life without those photographs.  Does that mean that you should simply settle for the cheapest camera?  No.  Because, there is a difference, a rather large one, between The Canon Rebel and The Canon 5d Mark ii.  [Yes, I'm a Canon Girl -- Sorry, Nikon Buddies...More on that in a Second!]

I got my first job as a real true photographer, in a children’s portrait studio, based off of images that I took with a Canon Powershot digital point and shoot camera.  I knew nothing about cameras, I just knew that I liked taking photographs…and that I somehow managed to capture the right moments.  Three months into this fancy new world of studio photography; I purchased my first REAL camera.  A Canon Rebel xti.  It was literally — penny to penny — all I could afford.

It did not take me long to realize that the studio world is pretty constricting.  This world where I dwelled wasn’t geared towards the art of photography, or even the love of photography — it was geared towards the sales of portrait packages.  I was a caged photographer; a pirate without a ship.  Days spent dreaming would have my mind wandering far beyond those studio walls, and wondering if maybe…just maybe….

I left the studio late one evening, a December chill in the air; I pulled my pea coat close to my chest and breathed a sigh of relief like no other.  It was done…no, I was done.  My breath rose into the cool nights air; I looked up to the stars and a smile found my lips.  I never looked back.  Those days spent dreaming were about to come true.

As scary as it was, and as scary as it still can be on some days…I began Rebel Belle Photography.  Some people have children.  They have homes, and puppies, and white picket fences.  I have this company.  I breathe this company.  I live this company.  It is, in every second of every day, my heart beat.

So, advice?  Start now. Start with whatever camera you can get your hands on.  Whether it’s film or digital.  Point and Shoot or DSLR.  Use the camera on your phone if you absolutely must (and I do, quite frequently, by the way!).  The best camera, my friends — is the one you have on you.  The one you can afford.  There is no rule that you absolutely cannot upgrade, and there are awesome companies out there that rent equipment too – which is great for trying before buying! (I use The Lens Depot here in Orlando)  The one thing that so many of us photographers say over and over again is that we wish we would’ve started sooner.  I am here to tell you to start today.  Right this second.  Seek out different angles.  Awkward moments.  Inanimate objects.  Tell THEIR story, because…in essence, that is YOUR story.

Nikon vs. Canon? You will hear photographers argue this until they’re blue in the face.  I’m not one to argue, so I’m going to tell you, quite simply, it is a uniquely personal choice.  There are all kinds of arguments to as why one is better than the other – at the end of the day?  They both take incredible photographs, and very few people on this planet, if any at all, will be able to tell you if an image was taken with one or the other.

Be more concerned with the moment than the equipment.  Equipment is important, but what is more important is your eye; the way you see the world – and your heart; the way you leave your fingerprints on this planet.

Photography is every bit an exploration. Don’t be afraid to explore your camera.  Try different settings, take off the training wheels.  For so long I was terrified of shooting on anything but automatic because I didn’t want to screw it up — but here’s the thing about that — those manual settings?  Will open so many more doors and windows.  You won’t just be taking photographs, you’ll be creating photographs!  Personally, for me — exploring on my own terms is the best way that I learn.  So I jumped in feet first, completely blind, and taught myself everything I know.  I learn each and every day.  Don’t assume that you know it all, because that is when you stop learning — and in almost any profession or hobby — after you stop learning?  You might as well kiss it goodbye.

Get out there & just SHOOT! What they say about practice making perfect?  Is true.  You can NEVER get enough practice!  Sometimes when I can’t grab a friend to photograph…I just go out and photograph my world.  Flowers.  Rain drops.  The way the sun is setting on that particular day.  Pets & what I ate for dinner.  If I’m having a rough day…I’ll grab my camera, hop into my Mini Cooper, go out for a random drive and explore.  Photography always brings me peace, and keeps me in hot pursuit for my next favorite image.  Yes, I’m good at this.  Yes, I make a living off of this.  But at the end of every day?  I am a photographer because I am in love with this; my heart simply knows no other way.

Break the Rules. Composition and Lighting techniques are always things to play around with.  Yes, there are right ways and wrong ways and “Rules to Follow” — but who likes rules?!  You can Google “The Rules” — but who wants to be like everyone else, right?  Go out there and try something different!  If you love it then it may very well become your style!  Know the basics, but don’t be afraid to break tradition.  One of the biggest things I had to overcome and learn in the early days was that there really wasn’t a right or wrong way – you’ll go through a process, of course, in finding who you truly are as a photographer in terms of what lighting you’re in love with, what composition suits your soul, and ultimately what style speaks your language.  But don’t be afraid to at least try!

Get out of Your Way! At the end of the day, whether it is photography or…anything else you are insanely passionate about?  The only thing, the only person, who can stand in your way…is you!  I speak from a great deal of, “Having Been There”…I came up with every excuse to NOT be a photographer.  I had a mental list of reasons for NOT doing what it is that I truly love, and for not being the person that I truly am – how horrific is that?  For YEARS…I stood in my own path.  And, if you haven’t picked up on it prior to this statement…a great deal of that was cemented in fear.  Once I got out of my way?  The fear subsided, and confidence took its place.

I’ve found that you’ve got to listen to the people who inspire you, who have gone where you yourself want to go — because they’ve been there and can tell you much more than someone who’s only read about it on the internet.  Be constantly curious and always ready for an adventure…and never, ever let anyone tell you that your dreams are out of reach.  I promise you, your dreams are out there just waiting to be achieved.
